Assassin's Creed II

Released: November 17, 2009
Score: 93%

With a lot of love for the first game most reviews were mixed saying that the missions were to repetitive but I liked the missions and Parkour of the game so for me this was an ideal game for me. After the confusion of the end of the first game this one sets off directly afterwards throwing you straight into battles and getting used to the controls. For the first 30 minutes of the game you will have to follow the story instead of having the will to free roam.

The story revolves around the "Animus", a machine which makes it possible for the player to view the genetic memories of protagonist Desmond Miles' ancestors, a long line of assassins. This time you are based in late 15 century Italy during the Renaissance and take control of a young nobleman-turned-assassin named Ezio Auditore da Firenze who after witnessing his family killed goes on a journey to uncover a hidden conspiracy after the murder of his family.

The graphics are pretty much the same as the first game with a few jitters in frame rate from time to time.
Not much has changed in the way of controls, a few more moves have been added and the free running works well it seems until you are in a rush and little things like jumping away from a wall you are climbing or diving off buildings when you didn’t want to can be frustration and time consuming especially when you are against the clock. This however is a small problem and once I learnt to let go of “X” at places I deemed dodgy areas then I found this problem happening less and less.
The battle system is mostly the same, you now can take weapons from your enemies and vice versa but for me this makes the combat even easier than before. When I play assassin’s creed I like to be unnoticed and do everything by stealth but I found with this game it did not matter if I was spotted because I could take all the guards out without any problem and get away with ease. The problem that they need to sort is the A.I. of the enemies, they will just hang back and let you pick them off one by one and you even have time to taunt and change weapons while they attack you one at a time. What should happen is all the guards attack you at once forcing you to make a getaway.

Also added is a meter that will tell you how much guards take notice of you, you can clear this by ripping down wanted posters or bribing a public speaker but they might as well not have this meter as I found I could easily walk around the town with a full meter and no one stop me, the only time I ever had problems was the guards on the roofs.
Assassination jobs are easier to pull off then the first game, you also have more of them which is a good thing but I would have liked them to be more of a challenge. What makes it easier is that you can pay prostitutes and thieves to distract guards or pay a group to attack them, giving you all the time in the world to hit your target.

Like the first game things to collect are back but instead of flags you have feathers to collect also statues and codex’s. There are also Glyphs which will unlock puzzles to complete which extend on the main game. Delivering letters against the clock, beating up cheating husbands and races are also small sub quests but again too easy. You also have stores to fix any broken armor or upgrade, a healer you can buy medicine from but I found this useless to have so much I never even used more than 2 bottles and I had 15. You can buy treasure maps and paintings and also change the color of your clothes.
Also swimming has been added which also adds another way of evading the guards as you can duck under the water and somehow they seem to forget you were ever there. Once out of the water your clothes will look wet and you will be dripping for a while which was a nice small touch to the game.
In short this is an amazing game improving on the first with more missions and a stronger story but it also has some of the flaws from the first game such as poor A.I. and issues when it comes to precise jumping.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Formats: Xbox360 [Played], PS3, PC
Published by: Activision
Developed by: Infinity Ward
Released: November 10, 2009
Score: 94%

This really was worth the wait and proves to be a suitable sequel to the first game. Graphically it’s outstanding and the gameplay and controls are everything you have come to expect from the Call of Duty games. They have done away with the respawning enemies which are music to some people’s ears but not for mine and I’ll tell you why. The Call of Duty games are the only series of games that I will start playing on the hardest level setting which as you would know is Veteran. Not only to I like the extra achievement points but I thrive on the challenge it presents itself and the feeling of accomplishment afterwards. The problem with MW2 is that it is far too easy on the Veteran setting, sure there were places I died a few times but there was only one point that I remember having a major issue with and that was just down to the autosave saving me as I was being shot at in the middle of making a getaway. The respawning enemies in the first MW meant that you were forced to keep moving forward and anytime you stopped to hide of get under cover you found 4 frag grenades landing next to you again forcing you to run out into gunfire. This and the fact that the game is very short are the only two issues I have with an outstanding game. The levels although easier than previous games are fun and enjoyable, even if there is one level which tests your guilt.
Apart from the main game you also have a Special Ops game which can be played solo or with a friend via the system link or xbox live. If you want to get those Veteran stars you will need to play with a friend because these short levels are tougher then the main game when playing solo. These levels are great when playing with a friend and really do expand on the main game making you work hand in hand with your partner.
Last but not least the multiplayer option gives you bigger maps and more perks as you play though the game. I have not yet touched the surface of this option but I believe it’s more or less the same as the first one but with different perks and a few more options.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

Formats: Nintendo DS [Played]
Published by: Square Enix
Developed by: Hand
Released: September 29, 2009
Score: 91%

The first Kingdom Hearts for the Nintendo DS is set between Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 and after (and during) Chain of Memories on the Gameboy advance. The story follows Roxas (who starts the game in Kingdom Hearts 2) from his first day as he joins the Organization XIII. As you play you will watch his story unfold and learn more about him and what the Organization represents. 358/2 Days introduces a new character Xion but I cannot go into much about her without giving some secrets away and you see Axel who makes his introduction in Chain of Memories and also in KH2 play a bigger role. The battle system is strange at first but after a couple of (game) days into 358/2 Days you will get used to it. There will also be a chance to change the way you rotate the camera after a while which I would advise you do as soon as you get the option. The cut scenes are very good as you progress through the story, showing flashbacks to KH1 and COM for those of you who have played them also adding in some new ones. The battle system is pretty much the same as KH1/2 although you do get a panel system. The panel system is used to hold all your items and potions also level up’s and extra moves. There are also "Link Panels" with which multiple panels can be combined to form new, stronger abilities.
The game is in 3D and for the DS this looks absolutely fantastic although the game makes minimal use of the system's touch screen functionality.

Every day you get set missions by the Organization which can be anything from collecting heats from heatless to taking out boss characters. You will visit some Disney worlds from the previous games and they all have their own recognizable music.

The only cons I have with this game is that some of the bosses have to much HP, once you have worked out how to avoid their attacks some of the bosses become really simple but you end up fighting some of them for 10 minutes plus just to whittle down their HP and this becomes tedious and boring. Some of the missions as you go through the game are the same and feel repetitive, like they have been added just to fill time. Also as the DS relies on its touch screen to play games and this game uses the Dpad I found the game uncomfortable to play for long periods.
My biggest drawback is not with the game itself but the fact it was released on the Nintendo DS. KH 1 & 2 came out for the PS2, then COM came out on the Gameboy and in Japan only on a special edition PS2 game as an add on. This meant that fans of the series have to buy a new console if they did not have it. Now this one is released on the Nintendo DS and another game Birth by Sleep will also be released for the PSP which means anyone who does not own these Hand Held’s will be missing out. I wait to see which system KH3 will be released on.
All in all this game is really good despite the small drawbacks and they are small. You can tell that a lot of time and effort have been made by the developers. One for fans of the series, but you won’t have needed to have played the others in order to enjoy it but those who have would understand it a lot more.

Mirrors Edge

Formats: PS3 [Played]
Published by: Electronic Arts
Developed by: DICE Sweden
Released: November 11, 2008
Score: 60%

My next game I wanted to finish off was Mirrors Edge, which was a big release game last Christmas. When I played the demo I absolutely loved the idea of free running across buildings and for me the demo did deliver however what I was yet to realize is that this game gives me motion sickness which means I start to feel sick after 20-30 minutes of gameplay.

For those who don’t know Mirrors edge is a single player first person action game with a slight twist. Your characters name is Faith and she is a 24 year old Runner who provides a courier service around the city via foot, stealing items that others can’t and using the buildings for her getaway. Only for a small parts of this game (and if you choose to) feature any form of shooting enemies most of the time you will be free running over and in buildings climbing walls, using zip lines and running along walls. Graphically although quite basic to a few colors I thought this game looks stunning in places outside but is let down once you are inside buildings. As you run around it really does feel like you are in control of your character as your head will move around while running or shake when you make a difficult jump, you will see your hands come from the sides when running, when you look down you will see your feet etc etc When it comes to game play I have utter love for this game and then in one swoop it changes to disgust and hate. Never have I fell in love and hated a game so much at the same time. Some of the worst points being unable to perform jumps you have done time and time again. What you could do once before you may fail the next time and it’s not down to controls. When you are flowing freely, timing every jump well it looks and feels amazing but all of a sudden you will get to certain area and it’s normally when you are being chased that some jumps let you down. There is a button that shows you the direction you should be going in but there isn’t always a straight forward route.
Take this level for example, I opened a shutter door where there were guards with guns all around and boxes and staircases, I have no gun and I am expected to locate my way through this maze that also has dead ends and at the same time being shot in every direction. Sometimes you are forced to replay parts over and over again and it really spoils what sets out to be a fantastic game. Busting through doors brings a different feel then previous games and I also like the slowdown button but this does not last long and isn’t always helpful. You face armed guards from time to and you can choose to fight them and take their weapon or sometimes it’s just better to try and lose them. All in all this game is both brilliant and too frustrating. You will be flowing through the city one minute then constantly trying to pull off another jump the next.

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune "Review"

Formats: PS3 [Played]
Published by: Sony Computer Entertainment

Released: November 20, 2007
Score: 91%

As my Xbox has suspiciously died I have gone back to some old games on my PS3 to finish them off. First off is Uncharted which I actually went back to because I really want to play the second game that is out now.
I am really glad that I did, this Tomb Raider slash Indiana Jones style game brings humor and great story telling to the Playstation 3. My first thought when playing this game was wow this is tomb raider with more fighting humans and there is a lot of fighting in this game which isn’t always a bad thing but in some cases it did go on for a while. You can only hold two weapons at once but you can drop and pickup weapons as you go through the game defeating enemies, which is quickly needed when you are low on ammo and will force you to move from area to area instead of just hiding in one spot. Enemies will also throw grenades at you which again will force you to move out of hiding.
You play as Nathan Drake who is looking for the lost treasure of El Dorado with the help of Sully and Elena who wants to capture the whole adventure on film as she is a reporter.
The gameplay is really good and the aiming system works very well, you can hid behind walls and creates but creates do not last long before falling apart leaving you exposed! The graphics in Uncharted are stunning at times especially the cut scenes. The humor this game brings works perfectly with the setting and both Sully and Elena prove to be fantastic sidekicks.
You can tell that the idea of this game has been taken from Tomb Raider even the puzzles which are a great touch but if you wait too long hints will come up. Also you will from time to time be asked to use the Motion Sensor in your sixaxis. Only criticism comes at the end of the game which some people may like but for me it changed it away from the game I was enjoying. Although I do like the section where you are walking through dark tunnels with a small light waiting for anything to jump out you but like I said before it sidetracks the game away from what it set out to be. The other issue I had was the length of the game, you can play from start to finish in less than 10 hours but the gameplay that you do play makes this one of my favorite games out for the PS3.

Halo ODST "Review"

Formats: X360 [Played]
Published by: Microsoft

Score: 81%

Another Halo game! Well not really, this one is set between 2 and 3 and does not feature Master Chief. In ODST you play as a Rookie in the streets of Mobassa who has been separated from the rest of his teammates. This area is an open world and you can travel through it to activate the other missions. Only issue is you have to go through the missions in the order they want you too and everywhere just looks the same, I found this the boring part in between missions. There is also a side quest where you can listen to the story of a girl during the Halo wars which I found interesting but didn’t find all the points so I don’t know the ending.
While you are playing at the rookie you will travel to different points to start missions or flashbacks of what the rest of your team is doing during the time you were knocked out. These missions are really good if a little short, you control different characters at each flashback and you get a feeling of being part of the team that is ODST as you unlock the whole story of what has being going on during this very short Halo game.

The controls are just like Halo the only factor is that you control ordinary men and that means you can’t jump as high as the Spartan or you are not as tough so you have to hang back in firefights and not rush in like the other games. This is a good thing especially if you have played through the other games as you get a real sense of being weak. All the weapons and vehicles are the same and handle the same but your energy works in a different way. As you are not the Spartan you can lose health quicker and if this is the case you need to find a health pack dispensers to replenish.
The game is very short, I finished the Normal campaign in just over 4 hours and that’s including looking for all the little girls’ story booths. (I found 28 out of 30) There is a second disk which has all the multiplayer maps from Halo3 which you wont need if you already have Halo 3 and also on the main disk is firefight which could have been a lot better if you could play with anyone online not just who is on your friend list.
In all I would not advise paying more then £30 for it, when its good its great when it’s not its boring and its very short!

Dissidia - Final Fantasy "Review"

Formats: PSP [Played]
Published by: Square Enix
Developed by: Square Enix
Released: 11 September 2009
Score: 91%

As a huge Final Fantasy fan this is a dream come true, taking characters from the early games right to FFX good and evil. Dissidia is so much more than a fighting game, you start the game buy choosing which day you want to earn double EXP on and also the game will decided another day which you earn more PP which can be used to unlock a vast amount of items and characters and bonus stuff. This game is a must for anyone who loves Final Fantasy.

The fighting is in a world of its own and battles can last from 5 seconds to 10 minutes, everything really is different from anything you have played before. You start with a prologue where you will learn different moves and some extras you can use within the battles. Once you have completed your training a vast amount of good characters will open up, each has his own story but all have the same objective and that is to acquire a crystal which will be used to defeat Chaos which is the big bad. Each character has his or her own fighting technique but the main buttons will be used for Jump, Attack and super attack which would be used to take out an opponent once you have broken their attacks. Whoever wins does not have to reduce their opponents HP down to 0 you can easily win the battle once you have taken a percent of their bravery down. The more you attack the higher your bravery and the lower your opponent and then once you see theirs break its time to go in for the kill. You also have a bar which builds up with each attack you make spreading something like shiny dust around the level which you can collect when passing through, there will also be a shiny bell which you can lock onto and will raise this bar quickly. Once filled your character can unleash their ultimate move which can finish off most enemies off in one hit.
Like other Final Fantasy games you can equip items to improve your character as s/he levels up, weapons and armor will improve attack and defense while equipping rings will improve HP and other extras. You can also collect and equip summons which will pop up during fights to help out, each summon has their own way of helping and once you collect enough you can choose which character owns which summons.
There really is a lot more to this then I can possibly put in one review, the fighting is really fun and you will find yourself flying through area’s performing stunning moves, the most impressive fight I have seen is Cloud vs Sephiroth fighting in the North Cave. The graphics are stunning for a hand held machine and even past characters have come back to do the voice overs. Yes this does mean Tidus too.
When you have enough PP you can start to unlock all the evil character which will be the main characters opposite from the game, E.G. Tidus vs Jecht, Squall vs Ultimicia etc etc.
Each of the 5 levels are played on a board, each character has their own board and way of traveling through it. Every move will cost you points but can be gained if you complete certain fights; these will be displayed before you choose them and will be things like finish the battle without taking a hit! On your first play through I wouldn’t worry about gaining the extra points and just level up as much as possible and collect all the chest you can, you will be scored at the end of each level and the points will gain your characters story level once you have completed that characters story.
The only bad thing about this game is you can be sailing through quite easy then you meet a character that can take you down within 10 seconds, it’s all down to reading what the character is equipped with so you know just what to do with him.

There really is much more I can tell you but I will leave it there as I am confusing myself let alone anyone reading this. I will add that the music features music from every game of that character with some old remixed. Also you can unlock different looks for each character like Clouds uniform from Advent Children. This game can be played by anyone but a true Final Fantasy Fan will admire it so much more.
Just an extra bit about the collectors set, this is more for fans, the game comes in a very nice box filled with goodies for collectors rather than use. The CD is a nice touch but I wish it was the full album rather than a couple of songs. If you can get one I would advise it but chances are they have sold out and people will resell them for a higher price, which is a shame for any true fan who missed out.

Scibblenauts "Review"

Formats: DS [Played]
Published by: Warner Bros. Interactive
Developed by: 5th Cell
Released: 09 October 2009
Score: 75%

As Maxwell your job is to find a Starites in each level in either an action stage or a puzzle stage. There are 10 worlds and each world has 10 Puzzle levels and 10 Action levels. Each level starts with a hint for each goal which makes what you need to achive slightly easier. Scibblenauts is basicly a puzzle game but you can ask for guns and bazookas to help you through each level. The game has a notepad at the top of the screen and once clicked it will allow you to pretty much type anything in that you think would assist you in your quest and when I say anything I mean anything, with over twenty thousand items and people added into the game. Not a great speller? Well once you type in anything that is not spelt correctly the game will throw up a few options that are close to the word you typed and this also goes for if there is more then one of the same thing.

Scibblenauts is an original game and i fell in love with it from the moment I first played it, solving puzzles with something original really does put a smile on your face and makes the game worth while. Once you complete a puzzle you get rewarded with points which lets you open up further places later in the game. You are awarded for time , items used and originallity. I really was amazed how the game knew which items did what and also which items interacted with each other like a dog would chase a cat which would chase a mouse or a caveman would be scared of fire and try to put it out.

While not having the best graphics this game is a pleasure to look at and simplicity is its biggest reward, this game is all about solving puzzles with items that the player thinks could assist. Sometimes you will get by from pure luck and this is one of the games biggest downfalls but I will return to this later.

Once you complete a puzzle/action level you will get a silver star and more levels will open up but to finish it 100% you will need to go through the level 3 times using different items then you used before which really becomes a challange when your brain runs out of words or when you can think of something but not its name.

The games biggest flaw is control. You use the stylus to move your character and the dpad lets you view what is around you. You also point at things you creates to move them into place or around the only problem is is if you mishit anything your character will come running along to where you clicked normally into oncoming danger or death meaning you have to restart the level. This really is a major problem as things like rope can move around and clicking the end could be more difficult then it sounds then along comes your character walking off a cliff or into lava.

With that out the way the game is brilliant its just a shame about the control which is a major issue.

You will never have played anything like this just be prapared to get frustrated.

**SPOILER ALEAT** There are some thought out words that let you travel to other levels like timemachine and teleporter, also some fun things like God and Angel but the fun is finding most of them out yourself **SPOILER END**

Batman: Arkham Asylum "Review"

Formats: 360, PS3 [Played], PC
Published by: Eidos Interactive
Developed by: Rocksteady Studios
Released: 28 August 2009
Score: 94%

A big fan of Batman I knew I was going to love this game from the trailers and screen shots, I played the demo on both Xbox360 and PS3 and after much debate I choose the PS3 version as it had the Joker extra challenge pack which I will mention a bit later.

You start the game wheeling the Joker into Arkham Asylum, Batman has just caught him but feels that the Joker let himself be caught but for what reason? Too late, Joker has trapped everyone in Arkham Asylum with help from his psychotic beau, Harley Quinn and has let all the prisoners loose and it’s up to you to sort things out.
I am feeling a lot of love for Mark Hamill for his voice acting; it really is spot on and seems anyone these days who plays as the joker does so brilliantly. First off I was worried that Ledger would never be able to top Nicholson but outclassed him and then Mark Hamill again performs the voice acting role with class.

The beginning of the game is very different from the demo with a 10 minute intro of you following the joker deep into the Asylum before he springs his trap, you will pass through some of the characters you later meet within the game too so keep an eye out
Once the joker escapes the game eases you into the combat side of things against a few of the inmates and then challenges you against one of the bigger opponents.
The combat is very easy to pick up and you will later gain other combat moves and take downs later in the game as you gain XP which allows you to purchase moves, weapons and upgrades from Waynetech.
With Joker in charge of the island he can navigate and control where Batman goes and as you hear him over the speaker system he comes out with some funny one liner, help or hindrance to your quest. Its little things like this which makes this game stand out from anything similar; the camera will sit over Batmans shoulder while you walk around and then move around while in combat and some takedowns will be shown in slow motion.
Building up a combo allows Batman to pull off the most spectacular attacks and earns more XP and it’s also the quickest way to finish off a large group of inmates. The counter moves, take downs and different type of enemies is what stops this game becoming a button mashing fighting game, you will encounter guys with knifes which you will need to use your cape to deflect them away and others with electric rods which you will need to dodge and sometimes you will encounter these enemies all together so you will have to pay attention to who you are attacking.
Along with fighting face to face you can also choose to take a more stealthy approach, this is needed when facing a room full of goons with guns as once you are spotted they will take you out very quickly. The game has unlimited continues and every check point isn’t far away but it’s nice to get through the games with as little deaths as possible.
To help with your stealth attacks you can creep behind a goon and perform a stealth takedown also your batarangs glide attacks and the takedown which I find most fun which is hanging from the ceiling and grabbing a goon and tying him up. Later in the game the goons and rooms become harder to do these stealth attacks but that’s a good thing.

The Riddler has kindly planted trophies, maps, riddles to find and voice recordings for you to find around the island and proves an extra challenge if you wish to enhance your gaming experience. The Riddles are fun and some can be a challenge to work out but once you pick up the map for certain areas everything becomes too easy.

As you progress the game the constant combat and travels will take their toll on our Dark Knight as his suit and cape become tattered and torn and you can see his face and body becoming more bruised which is a lovely touch to the game.

The game hasn’t many flaws but if I had to say anything bad it would be that the bosses are too easy and once you work out their pattern you should be able to take down them all with ease. Also the goons AI isn’t at all challenging but these flaws are nothing to fear as this is one of the best games I have played this year and contender for GOTY.

Once you have finished the game you can then go through all the challenge modes, and if you have bought the PS3 version you will also be able to download the Joker challenge packs. No doubt you will see more of these in future downloads via the PSN [or XBM if you are playing the xbox version]

One thing I will briefly say is the Scarcow parts in the game are fantastic and provide something different to the game. I wont give it away but they are very creepy, make sure you have your surround sound turned up.

Tales of Vesperia "Review"

Game: Tales of Vesperia
Published by: Namco Bandai
Developed by: Namco Bandai
Formats: Xbox360 Played: Xbox360
Release Date: August 26, 2008
Genre: RPG

When this game was announced on the xbox I was slightly disappointed and I am not sure why, I think it was because I loved Tales of Symphonia on the gamecube and love platforms sticking to the platform I fell in love with on. [Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the new world, now available to pre order on the wii].

First thing I noticed about this game was the intro which shows an Anime cut scene showing all the characters in action along to a very catchy theme tune so much so I leave it a to run through before I play the game.
As a fan of the Tales series Vesperia does not disappoint at all and ticks all the boxes to be a very enjoyable game. All the characters you get and meet are very likable which is strange in most RPG’s as there is normally at least one that gets on your nerves and most of the time it’s the kid. Although we do have a couple of them in Vesperia they work well of each other and become likable, this is down to how well the script is written for these characters, there are lots of speaking parts and most are humours. The only thing that started to annoy me where at the end of a battle your characters will say something and this can get repetitive but thankfully they do change through the game and depending on what characters you have in your party and also can be skipped.
You play as Yuri Lowell. You're an ex-soldier, living in the lower class world. Yuri quit the Knights because he was fed up with the way laws were stopping people get their just deserves and this as you will see when the game goes on is where Yuri comes into his own and shows a darker side to him. The first character you bump into and is also your healer is Estelle who is a vital character to have in your group of 4 but her whole “I am not coming with you anymore ok I will” attitude gets old very quickly.
Some people have said the battle system is just button mashing but there is so much more to in then this especially when facing bosses and harder enemies. It’s true that you would only use two attack buttons in a fight but you do need to block and watch everyone’s health as you are fighting. Also special attacks are provided later and can pop up in the middle of any fight. You would just control Yuri while the other 3 characters will attack and do their own thing around you, you can put your trust in your healer but it’s worth protecting her and stop her being attacked so she can cast. It would also be wise to watch her TP [Magic Meter] so she can cast, this can be replenished during battle slowly, after battle or through items.

As well as fighting and special attacks you will also pick up a limit meter which will increase as you play the game, this allows you a short burst of attacks without stopping and is great when under pressure. There were bosses where I would clean out some of my healing and Life items and it’s annoying that you are only limited to carry 15.
The usual RPG things apply like at the end of a battle you will gain experience, money and maybe new skills. You carry items for everything you need; you can change/upgrade weapons and clothing and carry a certain item to help you. And also for anyone who has played any of the previous games you can also cook certain foods which have different benefits.

I also love the soundtrack to this game; the music matches the mood of places you visit and the storyline which is a big factor of any RPG.
Alongside Lost Oddesy this is one of my favourite RPG’s on the Xbox 360, I wait with high hopes for the 2nd Tales of Symphonia game coming out on the Wii.

My Score 91%

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled "Review"

Game: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled
Published by: Ubisoft
Developed by: Ubisoft Singapore
Formats: XLA Played: XLA
Release Date: August 5, 2009
Genre: Fighting Action

The Turtles in Time Re-shelled is a remake of a 1991 SNES and Arcade game is now available for download on the Xbox marketplace for 800G. The game itself looks completely fresh and has that new feeling to it. The game is very short and you could speed through it in the space of 30 minutes just mashing the X button which is the main attack.
There isn’t much to this game really, anyone can pick it up and play it and even some of the achievements are obtainable for doing things wrong????
X is the main attack but you can also slide attack and flying kicks etc but most of the time you will only use the basic attack. At the start you will get to choose your difficulty level out of 4 options and then onto your turtles with Raphael & Michelangelo being pretty much the same and Donatello & Leonardo for longer ranged attacks.
The comments made by the turtles through the game get repetitive but its always fun when you manage to pick up and enemy and chuck it into the screen.
Some of the levels with traps are quite annoying as you get pushed into them by the enemies and they don’t seem to be effected by them.
The co-op is fun but playing with four players can be annoying as sometimes you can’t tell which turtle you are controlling as the screen is filled with enemies. Also only 1 pizza is provided so chances are some git will take it when they don’t need it.
You can get an achievement for finishing the game with all 4 but when you play on xbox live someone will always leave the game.
It’s good but not great. This game gets a 69%

Wii Sports Resort "Review"

Game: Wii Sports Resort
Published by: Nintendo
Developed by: Nintendo
Formats: Wii Played: Wii
Release Date: July 24, 2009
Genre: Sports

This is just more of a quick going over review then a full review and also only played as a single player and not multi which is where this game would shine.
You start by skydiving down from an airplane getting you used to the wiimote and motion plus. Controls are easy, you hold the mote out and move it down to travel faster straight to glide etc etc, everything is easy to pick up and has instructions which you can skip, apart from the first 3 minute video you have to watch to show you how to connect and disconnect the motion plus.
The menu system is easy to follow like the first, you click on what you want to do then it opens up the options for the game you clicked on. As you progress through the game there are stamps to collect, some you will just get by playing through everything and the other will take a little more work. I will briefly go through all of the games available, all which are open from the start but you have to play through some to open up more locations, courses or levels.

Swordplay – You use the wiimote only on this one, I have opened up three different games, first is you vs. a computer (or friend if you are playing multi), three rounds and it’s whoever knocks the opponent off the middle cycle into the water below. Best of three, and if both of you are standing once the time runs down then it’s a draw no matter how many times you hit your opponent. You hold the wiimote with both hands, use B to block and move the mote in every direction you can think of to attack. It's quite fun but I can see it getting boring fast. The second section puts you against an opponent and chucks items at you with an arrow directing you which way to slice it. This section is all about direction and speed and its first person who slices their objects correct and fastest who gets the point. The third section is the best, this puts you against loads of opponents and it’s up to you to fight your way through it to the boss without losing 3 lives. Duel is 1-2 players, Speed Slice is 1-2 players but Showdown is only 1 player.

Wakeboarding - You hold the wiimote straight in front of you like one bar, you are tied to a boat and move left and right to glide along the water. You use the ripples and waves created by the boat to jump and do tricks while in the air and it’s up to you to land straight to get the points. More impressive the trick the higher the score. Up to 4 players for this sport.

Frisbee so far is my favourite, using the wiimote you chuck your Frisbee as you would a real one and try and land it on the marker shown where your cute dog will catch it. Closer to the marker the bigger the score and the last 4 throws will also have a balloon you can pop for extra points. The motion plus works well here and you can see how the Frisbee tilts at the slightest throw and curve. The second game is Golf with a Frisbee, this is ok and made easier at the end as you only have to get the Frisbee through the area at the end and not land there. The Frisbee will throw like you would so if you have a curve when you throw this could prove hard for you. 1-4 players on both games.

Archery – One of the few games which uses the nuchuck. You use the wiimote and nunchuck to aim your bow and shoot arrows at a board. The wiimote acts as the bow itself and you use the nunchuck as the wire. You aim then hold down A then Z once you think you have the correct position you let go of A and an arrow will shoot out. Points range from 10 down to 1 depending on where you hit. The distance and wind will affect your shots. Up to 4 players on this sport.
Basketball - The 1 player mode was better than 3 on 3 imo. Controls are really easy to use, just use the wiimote in your throwing arm holding down B then as you would throw a ball let go of B and aim when you think it’s right. Only thing they can't imitate is the weight of the ball. 3 on 3 lets you pass the ball with A or the Dpad then you throw when you think its right. Dribbling requires you to bounce the wiimote up and down to simulate a dribble and if you get close enough you can go for a dunk. The 3 point Contest is up to 4 players but 3 on 3 is 1-2.

Bowling - feels the same but it’s easier to spin the ball with the use of the motion plus. The second game lets you have a go at striking down 100 pins and the third option adds barriers in the way of your pins, some of them moving. Like before up to 4 players can participate.

Table Tennis - feels like tennis did but again your movements are more accurate. You have a match option or a Return Challenge which lets you hit back balls served to you until you miss or hit one off the table. Items will be places for you to hit to gain more points. Match games have 1-2 players but up to 4 for Return Challenge

Golf – Again this is much like the first, all original courses are back and 3 new ones. You can tell the difference having the motion plus but the game is more or less the same. Like before you can have up to 4 players.
Power Cruising – another game which uses both wiimote and nunchuck, using both like handles to a bike. I would have liked to use the wiimote as a throttle to go faster instead you just hold down A or B which can be tricky and use the mote itself for turning and a sharp twist will give you a burst. You have the options of a Slalom Course or VS mode which would be better with two human players.
Canoeing – Using the mote alone move it from side to side of your body like you would, great fun to do and the course has bends which lets you understand how your movements can affect your direction. Both Speed Challenge and vs. are 1-4 players.
Cycling – Using both mote and nunchuck you move them up and down to speed up, and side to side to steer, Fun for about 3 minutes then gets old. You tire very fast and have to then stop peddling to gain your breath. You will start last and have to work your way around everyone. It reminds me of jogging on the wii fit but less fun. Both Road Race and vs. are 1-2 player

Air Sports – the last game you can play consists of Skydiving like at the start of the game which is only a one player game to catch as many of your wii’s during your fall. Island Flyover which lets you fly over the island collecting as many Info points as possible, this was a good play through and you can choose the time of day. Dogfight lets you try and pop your opponent’s balloons and whoever has the most left at the end wins, up to 2 players can play this but I felt that shooting each other would have been more fun.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village "Review"

Game: Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Published by: Nintendo

Formats: Xbox360 Played: Xbox360
Release Date: February 11, 2008
Genre: Adventure

Puzzles, I didn’t really want this game when it was released but when it sold out on release it raised my eye a little. It’s only now that I have managed to get hold of a copy and give it a play. The game is based up of lots of small puzzles, 135 to be exact with a story built in.
The story is actually very good and also has little cartoon snippets which are brilliant to watch and looks better then most others I have witnessed on the DS.

The puzzles range from really easy to pretty hard and there were a couple I had to really think about. The game offers you hidden coins as you travel around the village talking to the locals, these hidden coins allow you up to 3 hints on each puzzle.

This game not only has puzzles and a good story but there are side quests, one is to build a gizmo which will help you find coins and hidden puzzles, another is a picture puzzle and another is to collect items for your hotel rooms. Once you complete all these more puzzles will open up for you and these will be difficult.

I have now finished all 135 and this took me 14 hours of game play which for a hand held is more then sufficient. Once you complete the game there will be more stuff for you to play around with, including movie, voice and sound clips, artwork and profiles and something called “the hidden door”.

The game really does push your mind and is also very addictive. I look forward until the next one

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts "Review"

Game: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
Published by: Microsoft

Formats: Xbox360 Played: Xbox360
Release Date: November 14, 2008
Genre: Platformer

I was late playing the first banjo on the N64 and had to borrow a family members N64 to play it then had to wait until the release of the Xbox Live download to finish it and I thought it was a fantastic game that has dated well. I have not really played much of Tooie but I believe it to be the same kind of game as the first.

Banjo Nuts and Bolts however is completely different from the previous Banjo games. All what made the first game an all time classic has been completely stripped and remodelled. First of all the whole game is all about vehicles. At first you have limited parts and designs to accomplish anything and this game really does have a slow start. I got fed up with it pretty quickly as I felt the level design was poor and unimaginative and all the challenges felt like I was doing the same thing over and over. There was either a Race on land, water or air, getting to certain points within a time limit and carrying people or items. There were odd ones thrown in here and there but that was pretty much the jist. Each level had 6 entrances which were just to the same area with different challenges. These challenges you could gain Notes, Jiggies and Trophies (4 Trophies make up another Jiggie) depending on how well you did the challenge. Musical notes are also placed around the levels for you to collect and Jingos now offer extra challenges which unlock tokens used at a casino in Showdown Town which is the main area of the game. I actually preferred Showdown Town more then I did doing any of the other tasks. There were crates to find which unlocked extra parts, there were Jingos who were prisoner which you had to free and replace with their evil equivalent.
One thing I will comment the game on is how beautiful everything looks even down to Banjo and Kazooie. All the characters from previous games make an appearance but l just feel they have stepped away from what fans of the original games were expecting and hoping for.
The challenges can me quite challenging at time but once you have found many parts and you are able to build a better vehicle then the ones they provide you can turn a challenging race into a breeze. After awhile I did start to enjoy building vehicles and taking some of the previous challenges back on but I felt this came to late in the game and most people may have given up and put the game down by then.
In conclusion it does get better if you stick with it but on a whole I feel they could have done such a better game if the challenges and level design were better and maybe more of what we loved in the first game.
